What is the Shopify collaborator request code?

The Shopify collaborator request code is a 4 digits number that gives access to Shopify partners to your store in order to start a collaboration.

Note that collaborator accounts do not count against your Shopify staff quota.

What is the use of the Shopify collaborator request code?

If you don’t have the collaborator request code enabled any Shopify partner can send you a request to access your store.

If you have the code active a Shopify partner can’t send you a request for your approval in order for him to access your store until you provide the code.

Practically this is a way to protect you from Shopify partners sending you unsolicited requests to access your store.

If you purchased a service from us we request this code (if the code is enabled on your store) on our checkout page in order to send you a collaborator request for your to approve it so we can start working on the tasks or project.

Where to find the Shopify collaborator request code?

First you need to login to your Shopify admin. If you do not know how please check this tutorial.

Once on the Shopify admin page click on the “Settings” item like in the image below:

Shopify settings menu item.
Shopify “Settings” menu item.

A pop-up window will open like in the image below:

Shopify “Settings” pop-up window with the “Collaborator request code”

Select “Users and permission” menu item (marked with 1 in the image above).

In the “Collaborators” section (marked with 2 in the image above) if you have the collaborator code enabled, the option “Only people with a collaborator request code can send a collaborator request” will be selected and the code visible (marked with 4 in the image below).

In my example listed in the image above my “Collaborator request code” is: “1111” .

In order to send the code to your collaborator to login inside your store you need to copy it by clicking the “notepad” icon (marked with 5 in the image above).

How to generate a new Shopify collaborator request code?

If you gave the code to the wrong person or maybe too many of your ex collaborators have it, it is recommended to change it.

In order to do that you need to click the “Generate new code” link like in the image below:

“Generate new code” link that will generate a new “Collaborator request code”.
“Generate new code” link that will generate a new “Collaborator request code”.

A pop-up window will open. Click the “Generate code” button like in the image below:

Shopify will automatically generate a new collaborator code (in my example 2222) with which will replace the old one like in the image below:

New “Collaborator request code” generated by Shopify.

It is not possible to create and manually add your own code. Shopify will generate the code automatically. You can only request a new code.

How to disable or enable the Shopify collaborator request code?

By default all stores come with the collaborator request code disabled.

If you enable the code or your developer enabled this feature for security reasons you’ll see the option “Only people with a collaborator request code can send a collaborator request” (marked with 1 in the image below)  selected.

You can disable it easily by selecting the “Anyone can send a collaborator request” (marked with 2 in the image below) option like in the image below:

Enable / Disable “Collaborator request code” options.
Enable / Disable “Collaborator request code” options.

Once you disabled the “Collaborator request code” on your store by selecting the first option (marked with 1 in the image below), the 4 digits code will be hidden from view.

Everything will be done automatically by Shopify including saving your new settings (marked with 2 in the image below), so you do not have to save your changes once you disable this feature.

With the “Anyone can send a collaborator request” (marked with 1 in the image above) selected, any Shopify partner can send you a collaborator request without the need of the code.

Conclusion

This article was written to help with our checkout process since we require this code (if you have the code enabled) in order to send you a collaborator request to your store so we can start the work on the agreed task or project.

You can use this feature to secure your collaborator requests if you receive unsolicited requests, if not, I consider that the code is not needed since it adds one more step in the collaboration process between the developer or agency and you.
