How to set up a custom icon for your Shopify store?

Tweet LinkedIn

First, why would you want to do that?

Note that I’m not talking about a favicon in this tutorial, but rather about a feature that allows you to identify your store easier in the Shopify admin.

This is very useful when you have multiple stores or you are a Shopify partner and you need to identify the client store in the “Store selector” that allows you to switch quickly between stores.

What will we be changing?

We’ll be changing the store identification icon (marked with 1 in the image below)  as seen in the image below:

Shopify “Dashboard” page.

Go to “Settings” (marked with 2 in the image above).

Hover on the icon next to your store name in the left sidebar like in the image below:

Once you hover over the icon you’ll see listed above a “Edit” icon, click on it:

Upload the icon

After you click on the “Edit” icon you’ll see a pop-up like in the image below:

As you see the pop-up title is “Internal icon” (marked with 1 in the image below)  and also an explanation (marked with 2 in the image below) that this icon is used only internally in the administration area and no customer will see it.

Note that the supported files for this icon are HEIC, WEBP, SVG, PNG or JPG.

As measurements the image should have a minimum size of 512px x 512px.

I will use in this example a SVG so no minimum is needed since the SVG file will scale nicely.

Click on the “Upload icon” to select the image to use for the icon (marked with 4 in the image below):

A new pop-up will display with the Shopify image library. If the file is inside the library (marked with 1 in the image below) you can select it from here if not you need to upload the image from your computer to the library.

If this is the case click on the “Add images” (marked with 2 in the image below) to upload the image.

Select the image from your device (marked with 1 in the image below) and click the “Open” button to upload the image to the Shopify library (marked with 2 in the image below).

Now the image is uploaded to the Shopify image library (marked with 1 in the image below)  and is already selected. All you need to do is click the “Done” button (marked with 2 in the image below).

In conclusion, customizing the store identification icon in the Shopify admin interface is a valuable feature, especially for those managing multiple stores or Shopify partners dealing with numerous client stores.

This guide has demonstrated the steps for changing the icon, thus making your store or your clients’ stores more identifiable in the “Store selector.”

This seemingly small tweak can go a long way in improving usability, streamlining store management, and reducing errors when switching between different stores.
