How to add the title and meta description in Shopify?

Tweet LinkedIn

Creating a captivating title and a concise meta description for your Shopify store isn’t just beneficial for SEO, but it also entices potential customers to visit your store.

Follow the steps below to seamlessly add or modify these details:

Login into your store

Login to your Shopify store first. If you do not know how to do that, I’ve written a detailed tutorial here: ā€œHow to login into your shopify store?ā€

Add the title and meta description

Once logged in, follow these steps:

From the Shopify admin, navigate to the ā€œOnline Storeā€ channel (marked with 1 in the image below) and go to ā€œPreferencesā€ (marked with 2 in the image below) .

Under the ā€œTitle and meta descriptionā€ section (marked with 3 in the image below), you’ll see fields for your store’s homepage title and meta description.

In the ā€œHomepage titleā€ box (marked with 4 in the image below) , enter your desired title.

This is the title that will appear on search engine results and on browser tabs when someone visits your store.

The title shouldn’t be longer than 70 characters.

In the ā€œHomepage meta descriptionā€ box (marked with 5 in the image below), input a brief description of your store.

This should be a concise summary not longer than 320 characters that describes the essence of your business.

The meta description is also what search engines usually display beneath your site’s title in search results.

Note that displaying the meta description is not a norm for search engines.

Every search engine decides based on algorithms if they list the meta description or pull text from the page content.

Some SEO ā€œexpertsā€ say this is not a must. I say it is a must since I’ve seen many, many times when Google listed the meta description.

So make sure you add it, it is crystal clear and describes perfectly what your business does

For this example I’ll add for the page title: ā€œHowCommerce Storeā€ (marked with 1 in the image below) and for the meta description ā€œOur store offers premium themes and services for the Shopify platform.ā€ (marked with 2 in the image below).

Verify the title and meta description

It’s crucial to verify that your changes have been implemented correctly. Here’s how:

Visit your store by clicking the ā€œView your online storeā€ button (marked with 1 in the image below):

Hover over or click on the browser tab. You should see the title you’ve just entered.

I usually look inside the code for the title as well for the meta description.

To verify the title inside the code, right-click anywhere on your store’s homepage and select ā€œView Page Sourceā€ or a similar option.

On MacOS the shortcut is ⌘ + OPTION + U and on Windows CTRL + ALT + U.

For meta title in your store’s source code you should find a line of code that looks something like (marked with 1 in the image below):

<title>HowCommerce Store</title>

For meta description in your store’s source code you should find a line of code that looks something like (marked with 2 in the image below):

<meta name="description" content="Your entered meta description here" />
ā€œMeta Titleā€ and ā€œMeta Descriptionā€ in the source code.
ā€œMeta Titleā€ and ā€œMeta Descriptionā€ in the source code.

Ensure that the content matches what you input in Shopify.

Another method is to use online SEO tools or browser extensions that display meta information for web pages.

I’m not going to talk about these types of methods in this article.

Conclusion

Optimizing your Shopify store’s title and meta description is an easy yet crucial task that can enhance your visibility in search engine results.

By following the steps above, you can ensure that you present a clear and compelling message to potential visitors and search engines alike.

Remember to keep your descriptions concise and relevant, and revisit them occasionally to ensure they remain up-to-date with your store’s offerings.
